Our Guiding Principal...
A unique and distinctive quality of the United Methodist Church is that instead of requiring belief in specific theological understandings, we practice a method of "doing theology." This process draws on four elements which we call the Wesleyan Quadrilateral:
Scripture: Everything necessary for salvation is found in the Bible, but since it is not a science or history text book, it isn't to be read literally. Instead, Scripture is a great starting place in one's decision making process - but other factors need to be brought into consideration.
Tradition: Understood as "Church Tradition" - what those who have gone before us have said about their faith and systematized in our institutional church. How has the church responded or behaved? What's worked in the past?
Experience: As a church, we value the individual's personal experience of the divine. How we experience God both individually and collectively is important in our faith journey.
Reason: A critical factor in understanding how to read the Bible, apply eternal principals in our lives, and interact in today's complex world. As we are to love God with all our heart, strength, soul and mind, Reason is indispensable in tying together all four elements of the Wesleyan Quadrilateral.
"If your heart is as my heart, give me your hand - let us journey together." - John Wesley
