Yesterday...
The Sparta United Methodist Church had its beginnings nearly 200 years ago with the arrival of the Rev. George Bunghart in 1820. His first sermon is said to have been preached in an old tavern called Granny Stewart's.
The original church was completed in 1869 at a cost of $6,455.46. Located on Sparta Avenue, this site served as home for the Sparta United Methodist Church for almost 100 years. Construction for the present church, just up the road from the original building, began in 1958. Demarest Hall, currently the fellowship hall, was the original sanctuary. The present sanctuary was completed in 1976.
And Today...
The new millennium finds an active and spirit-filled church serving the needs of a growing community in response to God's love. So much more than brick and mortar, we understand the church to be a community of students, seekers, believers, and disciples open to the message of the gospels and willing to journey together.
We Welcome All...
The Sparta United Methodists are a people committed to the practice of open hearts, open minds, and open doors. We seek to be "ministry friendly:" supportive to those who feel a passion for a particular ministry which aids, assists, sustains, helps, heals, and/or brings to wholeness those who are in need. We strive to educate, encourage, and empower members and friends both in spirit and in practice, to journey deeper into the abundant life that Jesus promises.
